Boiler Plus: What does this new Energy Efficiency Legislation mean?

Starting 6th April 2018 this new energy efficiency legislation kicks in and affects the installation of heating systems in the UK.
‘Boiler Plus’ is a new standard created by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy.
The Boiler Plus standards are in preparation for a shift to a cleaner future in heating homes and to keep energy costs down. It is also designed to maximise comfort and reduce carbon emissions. These standards will mandate the following:
- Require all gas boilers installed into existing systems in England to have an ErP efficiency of at least 92%
- Require time and temperature controls to be installed at the same time, if not already
present and working; - Require combination boiler replacements to include the provision of an additional energy
efficiency measure to be installed at the same time. But to reflect the diverse needs and
circumstances of our homes and our households, the requirement will flex to allow a wide
range of technology options to be considered.
Additional Requirements:
In addition to meeting the above requirements, one of the following items need to be installed with the boiler –
- Flue Gas heat recovery
- Weather Compensation
- Load Compensation
- Smart Heating Controls
What happens if I don’t comply with these?
Installers who don’t comply are breaching the Building and Regulations and are therefore breaking the law and could face prosecution.
The householder is also required to comply with Building Regulations. Having non-compliant work carried out may result in prosecution and penalties up to £5000 for the homeowner.
