Every radiator valve fails eventually. A gland weeps, a shaft snaps, or the pin stops moving. Dirty system water brings that forward. The valves worth fitting are the ones an engineer can repair on a live system, with a service tool, instead of draining the heating down.
What usually fails
- Leaking glands. Water weeps from the spindle where the head meets the body.
- Broken shafts. The spindle shears, so the head no longer moves the valve.
- A pin that has stopped moving. One radiator stays cold while the others heat. See TRV pin stuck.
Valves a service tool can repair
The video uses an IMI removal tool on an Altecnic / Caleffi TRV. The steps are on how to repair a TRV with a service tool. Working on a live system is an engineer’s job.
Popular TRVs, whether a repair tool exists, and whether the IMI removal tool fits.
| Brand | Model | Repair tool | IMI removal tool | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Altecnic | Ecocal | Yes | Yes | Altecnic / Caleffi also have their own service tool. |
| Drayton | RT212 | Yes | No | Own gland kit, so the seal can be replaced without draining. Drayton gland seal kit 0735009 includes two seals. Balancing key 0735162. |
| Drayton | TRV4 | Yes | No | Same gland kit as the RT212: 0735009, with balancing key 0735162. Not an IMI insert. |
| Honeywell | Valencia V120 | Yes | Yes | Honeywell service tool VA8200A001. |
| Honeywell | V117e | No | No | No repair tool. The VA8200A001 is for the Valencia V120, not this model. |
| IMI | Eclipse | Yes | Yes | Replaceable insert. |
| IMI | Calypso | Yes | Yes | Replaceable insert. |
| Pegler | Belmont III | Yes | Yes | |
| Pegler | Terrier | No | No |
Top picks
- Honeywell Valencia V120. Takes the VA8200A001 service tool, and the IMI removal tool fits. Honeywell wheelhead valves with a thick stem and a solid gland nut are the matching choice on the other end: the nut can be tightened if the gland weeps.
- IMI Eclipse and Calypso. The insert comes out and a new one goes in. IMI lockshields are solid and hard to tamper with.
- Altecnic Ecocal and Pegler Belmont III. Both take the IMI removal tool, so the same kit covers them.
Drayton RT212 and TRV4 are repairable, but only with Drayton’s own gland kit. Pegler Terrier and Honeywell V117e have no service tool, so a failed valve means a drain-down and a new body.
