Vaillant vSmart Thermostat

A modulating, load-compensating smart thermostat made for Vaillant ecoTEC boilers, rather than a traditional on/off room thermostat.

Update, October 2026. Vaillant UK lists the vSMART as discontinued. Its installer pages name the myVAILLANT connect internet gateway as the alternative, used with current senso controls such as sensoCOMFORT (VRC 720) and the myVAILLANT app. Existing vSMART systems can still be monitored through myVAILLANT Pro; Vaillant says they are not compatible with the homeowner myVAILLANT app.

The Vaillant vSmart was made specifically for the Vaillant ecoTEC range. Unlike a traditional on/off thermostat, it is a modulating thermostat: it talks to the boiler so heat output can follow the room, rather than simply switching the boiler fully on or off. See our article on A-rated modulating controls for more. The video below shows the difference.

Why this was not the UK default

Most of Europe already uses this kind of room sensing. In the UK, many installers have historically fitted on/off thermostats as standard, so modulating controls were less common even on boilers that could use them.

Boiler Plus

From April 2018, Boiler Plus has required one of four extra energy-saving options when a gas combi boiler is fitted in England. Two of those options are load compensation (modulating controls) and smart controls. The vSmart is both load-compensating and a smart thermostat, so it could meet either the load-compensation or the smart-controls option for a gas combi in England. That is one option, not two: you only need one of the four measures.

The load-compensation path, shown in the video, is the one that speaks to the boiler directly. That is usually more useful for comfort, and for keeping a condensing boiler in its efficient range, than a smart thermostat that only switches the boiler on and off.
