Vaillant F76 Fault Code

Overheating protection on the primary heat exchanger has responded

Back to Vaillant Fault Codes

Gas Safe: Gas work, flue work, and PCB replacement on a gas boiler must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Homeowners can check obvious items such as heating pressure, condensate overflow, and whether a control is unplugged — then call an engineer.

Always confirm the part number against the boiler GC number and the installation manual before ordering.

Overview

F.76 is the thermal fuse / overheat protection built into (or on) the primary heat exchanger. When it has opened, the HEX has already seen a serious overheat, or the fuse/cable has failed.

Vaillant meaning: Overheating protection on the primary heat exchanger has responded

Possible causes

Possible solutions

  1. Do not keep resetting. Find why it overheated: pressure, pump, air, sludge, isolation valves, plate HEX (combi).
  2. Check the fuse connector and continuity of the overheat fuse. An open fuse usually means a new heat exchanger assembly — the fuse is not a serviceable jumper.
  3. Flush / clean the system before fitting a new HEX or the fuse will open again.
